How do you connect with your audience in a real way that turns them into loyal followers? You utilize a storytelling strategy.
A storytelling strategy allows you to connect with your audience on a deeper emotional level than bland cut-and-paste captions. When your social media content is relatable and compelling, they want to keep following along to see how the story unfolds.
Your storytelling strategy should be so uniquely “you” that it can’t be copied. It will humanize yourself to your audience and help you confidently establish a one-of-a-kind voice that your followers will come to know and love.
What is a Storytelling Strategy?
Your storytelling strategy guides you to posting authentic content that will keep your audience engaged and inspire them to take action with your brand. You will use your strategy to craft your own narrative in a way that connects with your audience on an emotional level and meets your business goals.
Your story needs to feel and sound like you, so part of the strategizing process is discovering your unique voice. Whether you want to post dancing videos, share your recipes, or invite your followers to sign up for your new course, all of your posts should align with your custom-crafted storytelling strategy.
If that sounds limiting, it’s actually not! There is an art to crafting your storytelling strategy that is extremely freeing. You get to be creative and bravely show up as your authentic self on social media. The world doesn’t need more templates, it needs your unique story to pierce through the noise and reach your ideal audience.
How to Create a Storytelling Strategy of Your Own
This is my tried and true method for creating a storytelling strategy that will give you the confidence you need to show up for your audience and impact them on an emotional level.
1. Define Your Goals
First of all, WHY are you telling your story? What do you want to accomplish by sharing it? What actions do you want your followers to take as a result? Write down all of your goals and make them as clear as possible. They will guide you as you craft your storytelling strategy.
Do you feel like you’re speaking into an empty void when you post on social media? The problem is that you aren’t speaking to a specific target audience. When you try to make your content universal so that it reaches everyone, you end up reaching no one.
Think about who your story is really for, and write down what they are like. What age are they? Are they women, men, or both? What are their unique problems that you have a solution for? What type of social media content do they connect with?
The more you niche down your target audience, the more you can craft your posts for them and keep them tuned into your story. This strategy also helps you turn your audience into a community of like-minded people excited to interact with your brand and each other.
3. Determine Emotions You Want Your Audience to Feel When They Interact With Your Brand
You know it’s vital to impact your target audience, but how do you want to do that? What emotions do you want to stir up in them when they check out your content? Choose the top three emotions that you want your audience to feel every time they interact with your brand.
Here are a few examples:
There are many more, so don’t be afraid to get creative with this one!
4. Create a Storytelling Library
You’ve heard of batching your content, right? You can take that same concept and create a library of stories to pull from when you need to create new social media content. Take an hour to brainstorm stories from your life that align with your storytelling strategy and incite the emotions you want your audience to feel. When it’s time to plan your posts, you can use your storytelling library to generate new content that your audience will love.
